Can I drink kombucha warm?
We’ve had a few people ask us this recently (ok, two people, but if they both asked, we figure more of you might be curious!). In short, yes you can; however, there are a few things to know. One of the biggest benefits of drinking kombucha is the billions - yes, you read that right - of probiotic cultures in each serving. Like many people, those cultures are happiest when the temperature is between 70-80°F. Kombucha needs to be stored cold to keep all those probiotics healthy and dormant, and turning up the heat too much above body temperature can kill them off.
If you want to try kombucha warm, raise the temperature gradually, such as putting the bottle in a bowl of hot water, or let it warm on the stove, but make sure it stays well below a boil. And remember, loosen up the cap on that bottle to slowly release the carbonation into the air rather than quickly releasing warm kombucha all over you - known colloquially in the industry as a “kombucha volcano” or a “booch geyser.”
